Sylvia + Joe’s Same-Day-Edit: July 4, 2009

July 5, 2009 | Filed Under Same-Day-Edit | 2 Comments

Yesterday Sylvia + Joe tied the knot at the Celebration Pavilion in Vancouver.  Speaking of celebrating, I think the bridesmaids and groomsmen are all still celebrating the Tiffany & Co gifts they so generously received from Sylvia + Joe.  I guess Sylvia herself is also a huge Tiffany fan since she decided to theme her entire wedding around the color scheme of the famed jeweler. The bridesmaids dresses were Tiffany blue and matched the groomsmen’s tuxes and ties which even matched the hankies that came in handy during the ceremony - talk about attention to detail!  The weather also decided to co-operate and gave us a beautifully clear blue sky as a backdrop - thanks Vancouver!

Their reception was at the new Kirin Seafood Restaurant in New Westminster.  After some great speeches and table toasting it was time to show Sylvia + Joe’s Same-Day-Edit.  Below is what we put together for them yesterday!  Congratulations guys - it was a beautiful wedding and we were honored to capture it for you!

Some Photos from our Favourite Place on Earth

June 23, 2009 | Filed Under Just Because, Photography | 3 Comments

It’s no secret by now that I love Hawaii and in particular, I love Maui. I’ve been going there since I was a small child and each and every time I return I’m amazed at how I feel an inner sense of calm as soon as I step off the plane - it truly is, my favourite place on earth. After filming Ashley + Adam’s wedding we stayed on the island for another week and since we had our trusty 5DmkII cameras with us, decided to snap some photographs of some of the more unique elements that make up Maui.

It was tough to peel ourselves away from this beautiful place but at some point, you have to get back to work. I was okay with this though, knowing that it wouldn’t be too long before we were back! Here are some stills that we took while we were there!

3 Weddings + 3 Same-Day-Edits in 4 days in 2 countries

June 12, 2009 | Filed Under Destination Weddings, Exciting!, Same-Day-Edit, Staff Announcements | 1 Comment

I knew that June was going to be one of busiest months on record for wedding films, but I also knew that it was okay, because what we would be blessed to create over this month, thanks to our wonderful couples would be amazing.  Before I left to film Rosemary + Tom’s wedding this past Saturday, my wife reminded me why we create our wedding films - that this is an heirloom for our clients and their families - something that before we start filming each day, just plain doesn’t exist, but will be forever something that my couples’ watch once we create it.  Sometimes you need that re-charge, and it was with this in mind that I approached our next 4 days.  Back to how busy June is.  Last weekend we filmed the most weddings we had in a row since we started in 2003.  To make things even more interesting, each of them had Same-Day-Edits!  Good thing I’ve never been one to turn down a challenge!

Rosemary + Tom were married in Vancouver with their reception at the Croatian Cultural Centre on Saturday, June 6th. I love Croatian weddings because there is always such great celebration both after the wedding and at the reception.  There’s just something about the little band with the guitar and accordian that sets people dancing!  After fun photoshoot sessions at the beach near the Vancouver Sailing Club (love that pier) and downtown at the Marine building we headed over to Rosemary + Tom’s reception venue.  The band (including the accordian of course) were there to welcome the guests and there was no shortage of eye candy to film until Rose + Tom were announced in.  Along with our SDE that we played after dinner, we also showed a slideshow of them growing up but what was really different was that Rose had asked us to intercut interviews her brother had done with couples before their wedding into a slideshow.  It’s funny how when you cut footage a certain way it can really evoke both humor and laughter - the crowd loved it!  After 14 hours it was time to head home though and charge our batteries for the wedding the next day.

Tina + Philip were married at the Sutton Place in Vancouver on Sunday, June 7. Tina contacted us about a year ago about her wedding after seeing the film of a former client of ours.  Tina was a bridesmaid at Tricia + Keith’s wedding in Vancouver in 2006.  I’ve said it before but I absolutely love it when clients come by way of referral from past clients - it really reaffirms why we film weddings - and it helps create a built-in relationship before we even begin filming the wedding.  Tina + Philip were our first “first look” couple of the season too.  What this means is that they decided to see each other before they got married.  They picked a beautiful secluded/wooded area in Stanley Park to see each other for the first time - it was such a cute moment!  For Tina + Philip’s wedding we worked with the fabulous Melia Sorensen.  Note to self:  Next time you work with Melia, wear running shoes.  After our “relaxed” shoot in the park, she started running through the streets of Gastown to get some really dynamic shots.  Good thing I was armed with my trusty Glidecam so that I could follow along the entire way.  Look for that shot in their SDE and just imagine it continuing non-stop for anther minute or so.  After arriving at the Sutton Place later that afternoon it was time for their tea ceremony, their wedding ceremony and their reception!  It was a great night!  After 11 hours it was time for me to head up to my room and again, charge batteries to get ready for our flight first thing in the morning to Maui.

Ashley + Adam were married on Tuesday, June 9th overlooking the beautiful Maui shores at a private estate with close friends and family nearby. We arrived in Maui on Monday night after a day of traveling and immediately started scouting locations, knowing that we’d have a full week in our favourite place on earth after filming their wedding to relax.  Ashley was another referral client but this time through a friend I went to University with 8 years ago who I’m friends with on Facebook!  I’m constantly reminded what a small world it really is!  Back to the wedding.  Ashley got ready at the beautiful (and I mean stunning) Four Seasons resort in Wailea and Adam (who was already ready 3 hours before there ceremony) finished things off before the big event at Ashley’s parents’ house just up the road.  Throughout the day these 2 were just so in love you could just feel it.  We finished off a beach shoot with some romantic shots back at the venue where they got married as the sun set before heading to their reception where the party continued well after when we left late in the evening!  Thanks to Randy Panado, a talented colleague of mine based in Honolulu for coming out to film with me on Maui - I couldn’t have done it without him and congratulations to all our clients over the past week - thank you for trusting us with your wedding day and allowing us to create your heirloom for you!

Here are the Same-Day-Edits we showed during the 4 days:

Rosemary + Tom in Vancouver

Tina + Philip in Vancouver

Ashley + Adam in Maui, Hawaii

Jessica + Luca’s Same-Day-Edit

May 11, 2009 | Filed Under Same-Day-Edit | 2 Comments

Less than 48 hours ago Jessica + Luca were about to be announced into their wedding reception at the Fairmont Waterfront Hotel in Vancouver.  During their first dance only a few minutes later you could literally feel the happy energy emanating from them and also from the 400 guests watching them on the dance floor.  I’m not sure I’ve ever seen so many smiles as Jessica + Luca started the evening that capped a phenomenal day.

Their wedding started with Jessica getting ready in West Vancouver and Luca only a short 20-minute drive away.  After rushing back to both houses to capture what they were each doing before they got married, we witnessed a beautiful ceremony at one of my favourite churches in the city - Christ the Redeemer.

The afternoon started with a lunch-time reception held at Jessica’s parents’ house.  Both the food and view were absolutely incredible.  After everyone mingled and took some family portraits, we headed downtown with the bridal party for some group shots in coal harbour - the luck was definitely with Jessica + Luca for the weather on their day!

Jessica owns and operates her own couture stationery business so it was no surprise at all to see all the little details that had been thought out for her reception décor.  Everything from the escort cards, to the custom candy bar - all the details were there.

At the end of all the speeches it was time to show everyone what happened once again through one of our Same-Day-Edits.  Below is what we put together for them!  Congratulations again Jessica + Luca!  Thanks for having us there to capture your wedding for you - it was our pleasure!

Re:Frame Austin Round-up

May 7, 2009 | Filed Under Exciting!, The Re:Frame Collective | Leave a Comment

Well I’m back from our latest Re:Frame conference in Austin, Texas and wanted to say what an exciting experience it was for me personally.  The event took place from April 27-29th and was jam-packed full of both learning and social time for all of our attendees.  One of the highlights was the location where the conference was actually held - in a vintage movie theatre!  All of the presentations were shown in full quality on the movie screen behind the presenters and the attendees were also given the option to create a 30-second promotional piece for their own company to see what their work looked like in a real theatre.

On Sunday, we started the conference by having a launch party where we decided to incorporate what would become the ever-popular video confessional booth.  Click here to see all the antics from some of the attendees!

Monday we were down to business at the seminars but then left for a fun night of Karaoke - something which has become a Re:Frame attendee tradition of sorts.

Tuesday was another full day of education before heading out onto the streets of Austin for our Videographer Shootout.  World-renowned DoP and Cinematographer Philip Bloom was shooting behind-the-scenes with the new Panasonic gh1 and posted the following clip which has now been watched over 60,000 times - click here to take a look!  We capped off a very busy day by hosting our traditional event to thank our attendees.  Dubbed the  “Gunslinger’s Getdown”, we met at a restaurant called “Buffalo Billiards” and had some really informal time to chat, ask and answer questions and just relax with fellow colleagues from all over the World.

Wednesday ended our conference with one of the newest owners of the Re:Frame Collective, Jason Magbanua flying over 16-hours from the Philippines to Austin to make it in time to deliver his presentation (he had to film a last-minute celebrity wedding in the Philippines on Tuesday evening).  We ended our conference with an exciting announcment that our next conference will take place in San Francisco this October and will be a newer and even more improved version of the first 2 conferences we’ve done to date.

I wanted to thank all of the presenters and attendees publicly for helping make Re:Frame such a phenomenal success.  I’m looking forward to seeing more people attend in sunny (hopefully) San Francisco in just a few short months - details to come very shortly!

Melissa + Kevin’s Cuban Wedding Film Highlights

April 13, 2009 | Filed Under Destination Weddings | 8 Comments

After I posted some of the photographs I took for Melissa & Kevin’s wedding wedding in Cuba, I was fortunate enough to receive a ton of comments on the blog which were so rewarding to read!  Thank you to everyone who took the time to look at the pictures and make a comment.  Of course, first and foremost I’m a videographer so along with snapping a few stills, I was primarily in Cuba to film their wedding.  For a destination wedding, there were actually quite a few people in attendance, something which is hard to achieve but which is a testament to Kevin & Melissa’s fun and outgoing nature.

When they first asked me to come to Cuba, Melissa was wondering if it would be possible to edit a trailer to show at their Vancouver reception on April 4th.  Of course our answer here at Cloud Nine is always - YES, so below is the clip we put together for them to show their friends and family what happened in Cuba on their wedding day.  I had to travel to Toronto for business, but I wish I could have been at the reception in person to watch everyone’s reaction as they shared the fabulous week that we all had in this tropical paradise.  I hope you had a Mojito (or 2) for me!

So without any more delay, here’s what they showed at their reception!
